1. The skin is the largest organ in the human body, with an average surface area of about 20 square feet.
2. The skin has three layers: the epidermis (outer layer), the dermis (middle layer), and the hypodermis (innermost layer).
3. The epidermis is made up of several layers of cells and is responsible for protecting the body from the environment, regulating temperature and sensing touch.
4. The dermis contains blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles and sweat glands. It is responsible for supporting the epidermis and helping to regulate body temperature.
5. The hypodermis is made up of adipose (fat) tissue and connective tissue. It provides insulation and cushioning for the body.
6. Skin colour is determined by the amount and type of melanin (a pigment) present in the skin.
7. The skin is capable of repairing itself after injury or damage. This is why cuts, burns and other injuries often heal on their own.
8. The skin is also capable of producing vitamin D when exposed to sunlight.
9. The skin can be affected by a variety of conditions, such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and skin cancer.
10. Maintaining good skin health involves proper hydration and protection from the sun.
