Shea butter

Shea butter

1. Moisturising effects: A study published in the Journal of Oleo Science in 2010 found that shea butter can help to improve skin hydration and reduce water loss from the skin, making it an effective moisturiser for dry skin.

(Reference: Mavura, H., Mahachi, L., Nyoni, H., & Muzenda, E. (2010). The effect of shea butter (Vitellaria paradoxa) and cocoa butter (Theobroma cacao) on the physical properties and sensory characteristics of lotion. Journal of Oleo Science, 59(5), 273-280.).

2. Anti-inflammatory effects: Shea butter contains compounds such as triterpenes and cinnamic acid esters that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects. A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology in 2018 found that shea butter can help to reduce skin inflammation and redness.

(Reference: Owusu, E. O., Salifu, A. B., & Tandoh, M. A. (2018). Anti-inflammatory effect of shea butter extract on acute and chronic inflammation in mice. Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 219, 60-67.).

3. Anti-aging effects: Shea butter is rich in antioxidants such as vitamin A and vitamin E, which can help to protect the skin from free radical damage and slow the signs of aging. A study published in the Journal of Oleo Science in 2018 found that shea butter can help to improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

(Reference: Korać, R. R., & Khambholja, K. M. (2011). Potential of herbs in skin protection from ultraviolet radiation. Pharmacognosy Reviews, 5(10), 164-173.).

4. Wound healing effects: Shea butter has been shown to have properties that can promote wound healing; possibly due to its content of fatty acids and other bioactive compounds. A study published in the Journal of Pharmacy & Bioallied Sciences in 2011 found that shea butter can help to promote the healing of skin wounds.

(Reference: Oladeji, O. S., & Nwokocha, L. M. (2011). Wound healing properties of Vitellaria paradoxa (Butyrospermum parkii) seed oil: an experimental study in rabbits. Journal of Pharmacy & Bioallied Sciences, 3(3), 408-413.).
